There are many ways to get your kids to turn off the TV and read! Honest!
If your child has a favorite TV show, see if there is a book featuring the characters from that show. Chances are, there will be many! This is a great way for your child to see there favorite characters without turning in the TV. Popular choices with a variety of titles are Sesame Street and Dora the Explorer. You can even find Dora books at the dollar store.
For younger children, our favorites are board books and books with sounds. Try Toopy and Binoo and In the Night Garden. Check out Amazon UK if you are having trouble finding ITNG books.
For older children, consider age appropriate magazine subscriptions. Magazines have a special allure to kids and adults alike. The Cricket family of magazine publications have a ton of titles categorized by age. Sports Illustrated and National Geographic have kid versions of their magazines as well.
Books from movies are also great choices if you are looking for familiar characters. Most Disney movies have books featuring the movie characters.
Another great tip is to lead by example. If you love to plop down in front of the TV when you are bored then your kids likely will too. Turning off the TV to read a book or magazine yourself is an example your kids can follow.
Have a global ban on TV (that means for everyone) during certain times. Dinner time is a good one, so is right before your child’s bedtime, when you read a story. Try implementing a designated quiet or family reading time where everyone reads and the TV is off for a set amount of time.
Do not put a TV in your child’s bedroom, instead fill it with books. This is a solid way to ensure there is less TV and more reading.
